BIO

Jonathan Bumpus is a versatile trombonist, composer/arranger, and educator originally from Pullman, WA. He has performed with the UNC Jazz Festival All Stars, Colorado Jazz Orchestra, Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra, Bob Curnow Big Band, Eastman Jazz Ensemble, Dave Rivello Ensemble, and the Spokane Symphony. He participated and performed at the Jazz Education Network conference, the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Academy, and the Global Music Education League Symposium in Trieste, Italy. His compositions and arrangements for jazz ensemble, studio orchestra, wind ensemble, and marching band have been performed by high school and college groups across the country and have been recognized by the Ithaca College Jazz Composition Contest. A committed educator, Jonathan directed a high school jazz ensemble for four years, was jazz trombone faculty at the University of Northern Colorado Jazz Camp, and has taught jazz trombone, jazz composition/arranging, jazz theory, and jazz pedagogy as a graduate instructor at the University of Northern Colorado. His research has been published in Jazz Education in Research and Practice. Jonathan studied at Whitworth University and the Eastman School of Music with teachers Brent Edstrom, Dan Keberle, Mark Kellogg, Bill Dobbins, and Alan Ferber, and is currently pursuing doctoral studies in jazz composition and jazz pedagogy at the University of Northern Colorado with professor Drew Zaremba.
